In tragic news from the world of independent wrestling, as a longtime face and member of the New York Wrestling Connection. John “Crusher Doogan’ Mair has passed away. Mair was recognized as training under the Malenko family during his early years. He was recognized as being behind the wrestling school and promotion NYWC early on as well. The school helped to develop the likes of Tony Nese, Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, Alex Reynolds, and John Silver. This past Friday, at the Hard Times pay per view event Ricky Starks ran the gauntlet and defeated three men on separate occasions. He defeated Tim Storm, Matt Cross and Trevor Murdoch on his way to becoming the inaugural NWA Television Champion. In doing so Starks became the new NWA World Television Champion. However, only a few days removed from the Hard Times event Starks lost his newly won NWA Television Championship. At last night’s World’s Collide event between the WWE brands NXT and NXT UK, Angel Garza defended his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Isiah ‘Swerve’ Scott, Travis Banks, and Jordan Devlin. In the end, it would be Jordan Devlin who would capture the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. However, before the story could be told it would take a match between all four competitors that would be driven to see who would stand alone as the champion. At last night’s, NWA Hard Times event we saw new champions crowned throughout. There were three new champions crowned at NWA Hard Times. First off we saw Thunder Rosa defeat current NWA Women’s Champion Allysin Kay for the title. She captured the championship with a Thunder driver to finish off the now-former champion, Kay. Her win was met with a congratulatory embrace by Marti Belle and their manager Melina. The championship would be Rosa’s first NWA Women’s Championship and the fourth title is holding presently. Friday Night Smackdown takes place in Dallas, Texas. The Usos come to the ring first as part of a six-man tag-team matchup. This is the final episode before this coming Sunday’s Royal Rumble.
