On April 6th, 2014, at WrestleMania 30, arguably the most shocking event in wrestling history occurred. Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker faced one another in the Deadman’s yearly defense of his illustrious Wrestlemania streak, looking to go 22-0 on the big stage.
However, to the surprise of everyone watching, after a disappointing contest, Lesnar would defeat The Deadman. This put an end to the streak and created an immediate piece of wrestling history. This was the night the streak came to an end.
Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker -The Night The Streak Came To An End
The match itself begins with a stare-off. Both men seemingly confident they can defeat the other.
The Undertaker starts the match with a string of punches to Lesnar in the corner but is quickly on the wrong end of an Irish whip to the opposite corner, followed by a vicious suplex from The Beast.
Lesnar would then clothesline The Undertaker to the outside; however, The Undertaker manages to land on his feet and make it back to the ring.
As The Undertaker then strikes Lesnar in the corner, Michael Cole asks JBL if he thinks the pace of the match will ‘ramp up.’ Evidently, the commentators and the crowd feel the match has started slowly, as the arena is fairly quiet for a ‘Streak’ match.
Back to the outside, and Undertaker throws Lesnar into the ring post and rolls him back into the ring, looking to hit ‘old-school.’
Lesnar counters and tries to hit a spear into the turnbuckle, but Undertaker moves, and Lesnar smashed his shoulder into the post. The action spills outside again, and The Undertaker smashes Lesnar’s face against the ring steps.
The Undertaker pulls out a vintage leg drop to Lesnar on the ring apron. Inside the ring, he looks for an early chokeslam. Lesnar jumps out of the way and lifts The Undertaker into the F5 position, but he escapes narrowly.
Lesnar then slowly beats down The Undertaker near the ropes, not letting the phenom make it to his feet. Back to the outside, and Undertaker would start fighting back. However, Lesnar managed to fend him off and sent him flying into the barricade.
Paul Heyman, the advocate of Lesnar, actively laughs at the action, evidently enjoying his client giving out such a relentless beating. T
he Undertaker would again rally back, forcing Lesnar into the corner, delivering ‘snake eyes,’ followed by a big boot, dropkick, and a near fall. He then hit a chokeslam, but Lesnar again kicked out at two.
Undertaker would pick Lesnar up looking for a tombstone piledriver, but Lesnar escapes and hit an F5. This time it’s The Undertaker’s turn to kick out at two. Lesnar hesitates in deciding his next move, and Undertaker grabs him into the ‘hell’s gate’ submission.
Lesnar lifts Undertaker up whilst in the hold and slams him into the mat, breaking the submission. Immediately after, Lesnar drags Undertaker and is caught yet again in the same hold. He manages to counter the same way with a slam into the mat to escape.
Next, it was Lesnar’s turn to attempt a submission, as he locks in the ‘Kimura.’ The Undertaker rolls out and bends the arm of Lesnar back in a counter submission, but Lesnar makes it to the ropes to break the hold.
The Undertaker would attempt ‘old school’ again, but Lesnar pulls him off the top rope, into a second F5 and a pin, but The Undertaker would once again kick out at the last second.
Undertaker would then take a trip to ‘Suplex City.’ After being beaten down in the corner for a few moments, The Undertaker manages to lift Lesnar and hits the last ride.
He hits Lesnar with one last tombstone, but the beast kicks out one last time. The Undertaker is absolutely in shock that that wasn’t enough to finish the match.
Brock Lesnar & The Undertaker – The Streak Is Over
Finally, The Undertaker attempts one last tombstone, but Lesnar reverses, lifting the Undertaker into a third F5. He rolls over and hooks the leg in a pinfall as the ref counts to three. The streak is over.
The camera pans to different members of the crowd. Everyone is in complete shock. Heyman rolls into the ring, emotionally telling Lesnar, ‘You did it,’ repeatedly.
Lesnar’s music doesn’t play for over a minute after the bell, in an attempt to suggest that either this wasn’t meant to happen or that everyone is so shocked they forgot to even play his theme.
After Brock has left the ring, celebrating all the way up the ramp, The Undertaker finally rises. The crowd serenades the deadman with claps and chants of his own name.
The Undertaker hobbles from the ring, selling his injuries, and makes his way slowly to the back with his theme playing.
Reflecting in ‘the last ride’ documentary, The Undertaker explained that he suffered a concussion at an unknown point in this match.
This would explain the overall lack of quality and structure to the bout. The Undertaker was supposed to lead the two wrestlers, however, was left in no fit state to do so.
The Undertaker reflected on his WrestleMania 30 match against Brock Lesnar.
“The match with Brock happened, which, to this day, I still don’t remember. I’m not sure when I got concussed. I don’t know how that match happened.
I have no recollection of any of that. My last memory of that day was at about 3.30 in the afternoon. I was gone, man.”
“What I think happened was between getting older and then not having all the reps and taking all the bumps through the course of the year; eventually, it caught up with me.
That explains what happened in New Orleans; that’s why the concussion happened; it’s one concussion in one match; it destroyed my confidence.”
Ultimately, the streak ended in disappointing fashion. Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker was a methodical match, which ended in a way that many people disagreed with. Some felt that the streak should have been broken by a young, up-and-coming wrestler.
Others think it never should have ended at all. Regardless, this was still a truly historic day that wrestling fans will likely never forget.
