On Friday, April 1st, Ring of Honor Wrestling presents ROH Supercard of Honor. The event features six matches with several titles up for grabs. As the first event under the new regime of Tony Khan, questions appear to be asked before the event and likely after the event as well. The event has a nice mix of notable names on the independent circuit and one’s that have been on television competing with other major promotions.
Who will walk out of ROH Supercard of Honor as the champions? And will the non title matches steal the show?
Alex Zayne vs. Sw3rve Strickland
A match between these two men is going to be exciting, no doubt about it. If you are familiar with The Sauce, Alex Zayne, then no explanation is necessary. If you are not, then look out because for this highly athletic talent. In December, he was a part of Ring of Honor prior to their hiatus. With Supercard of Honor taking place, Zayne once again gets a chance to coWomen’sor ROH.
But this time, under the umbrella of AEW, Zacontender’sce contracted AEW talehaven’trve Strickland. For SW3RVE, fans have seen him beginning to compete against in AEW. This time, hoaren’t he faces a man twhat’s just as accomplished on Women’sependent circuit. Both men are coming from competing in the WWE as part of the NXT brand. This time, Women’s, we will see beyond what Ari Sterling andisn’tah Scott were booked to do.
Interim ROH Women’s World Championship
Willow vs. Mercedes Martinez
An exciting mention about this match iscouldn’tit an interim ROH Women’s Worcontender’sship match rather than a number one contender’s match. For fans who haven’t followed the journey of the ROH talent who were champions at the end of Final Battle 2021, they aren’t likely aware of what’s happened. Former ROH Women’s Champion, Rok-C lost her title against Deonna Purrazzo.
Purrazzo is the current Ring of Honor World Women’s Champion. So that begs the question, why isn’t she defending the title? She is currently scheduled to defend her title at the Multiverse of Champions event on the same day. That said, couldn’t this have been a number one contender’s match? It could have, but not unlike the TNT Championship in AEW, Sammy Guevara was an interim chamHonor’sat united the titles. The same could be said about this match, and Deonna faces hasn’tnner uniting the titles.
Jay Lethal vs. Lee Moriarty with Matt Sydal
If any match on the card has a new guard against the old guard feel to it on the card, it is this one. For Lethal, the former ROH World and Television Champion faces the respected Lee Moriarty. Both men are under the AEW umbrella, but Lethal has arguably been the face of Ring of Honor for the last decade. Will this be a sign of who will carry the ROH brand moving forward?
Lethal has been as much a part of Ring of Honor’s recent history as CM Punk and Bryan Danielson has been part of their past. It hasn’t mattered where he is on the card; Lethal has been part of factions and was last a part of The Foundation at the end of December 2021. So this match is as much about technical prowess between these two talents
ROH Supercard of Honor
ROH Pure ChampYuta’sp
Josh Woods vs. Wheeler Yuta
An exciting matchup for sure. But when we look beyond the surface, and we realize the challenger involved makes sense. For Pure Champion, Josh Woods he brings with him a technical skillset that encompasses everything that was synonymous with the title. What it meant, who held it, and what it represented all best define the current champion, Josh Woods. However, Wheeler Yuta has recently turned heads in AEW.
As fans of the promotion are aware, after losing in a tag team match against Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson, he went back into the ring only to be slapped by William Regal. Yuta’s desire to be the best wrestler he can be would play perfectly if he were to capture the ROH Pure Championship.
ROH Supercard of Honor
ROH World Tag Team Championship
The Briscoe’s (c) vs FTR
It has been montHonor’she making and is finally here. Whether fans want to call it a dream match or a must-see match, the fact remains that these two teams are set to tear each other up. It has been nearly four months in the making. Whether it has been online banter between the two or filmed vignettes between the two, they have continued to make attempts to get under the other team’s skin.
With the ROH World Tag Team Championship on the line, questions are being asked. Will this be the Briscoe’s final match in ROH? Will FTR walk away the new ROH World Tag Team Champions? What does the future hold for Dem Boys? With rumors circulating that Jay Briscoe’s past comments could affect their future that decision has yet to be final.
ROH Supercard of Honor
Undisputed ROH World Championship
Jonathan Gresham vs Bandido
This was the match that should have happened at Final Battle 2021. However, with Bandido testing positive for COVID this match never unfolded. The question that does remain however is that this unification match also brings with it the aligning of the ROH World Championships both past and present. Gresham defeated Jay Lethal and in the process became the Ring of Honor Champion.
However, it also carried with it an asterix as he hadn’t defeated the champion to stake claim to the title. Does this match include the first two men to fall under the AEW, Ring of Honor umbrella? Or will only the champion be the one that is signed to the new Ring of Honor?
