Hiromu Takahashi could become a triple champion. Isn’t that enough of a reason to watch? Off the heels of an amazing New Japan Cup tournament and a shocking NJPW Dominion, it is time for New Japan Pro Wrestling to begin its push into its summer shows. New Japan has decided to make the 2nd annual Sengoku Lord show one of the major shows of the year. The card has four singles matches, two title matches, and one amazing main event. As New Japan tries to build on the momentum of Dominion, this seems like a really strong follow-up. As NJPW Sengoku Lord 2020 has officially been announced.

Here it the full card for Sengoku Lord as announced at a press conference today:

New Japan Sengoku Lord (July 25th, 2020)

    Taiji Ishimori vs. Yuya Uemura

Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano), Gabriel Kidd, & Yota Tsuji vs. Great Bash Heel (Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma), Ryusuke Taguchi, & Satoshi Kojima

Chaos (Hirooki Goto, SHO, & YOSHI-HASHI) vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, SANADA, & Tetsuya Naito)

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Kota Ibushi, Master Wato, & Yuji Nagata vs. Suzuki-gun (DOUKI, Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, & Zack Sabre, Jr.)

    Kazuchika Okada vs. Yujiro Takahashi

El Desperado vs. Shingo Takagi (c) (NEVER Openweight Championship)

EVIL (c) vs. Hiromu Takahashi (IWGP Heavyweight Championship /IWGP Intercontinental Championship)

Lasher’s Last Thoughts: There is a lot to unpack in this Sengoku Lord card. Despite being a relatively new show in New Japan History, they are treating it like one of their major shows. It is pretty rare to see four singles matches on any NJPW show outside a tournament, Dominion or Wrestle Kingdom. New Japan is trying to play up the new eyes that seem to be on their promotion. This card will certainly help.

NJPW Sengoku Lord 2020 Card Announced

The tag matches are the usual New Japan formula. It will be interesting to see Naito as just part of a six-man tag match. What story will they tell in that match with LIJ? How will Naito react?

The three singles matches at the top of the card will certainly be the most interesting. Okada versus Takahashi will be unique at least. The built-in storyline from Takahashi costing Okada the New Japan Cup final is the main sell of this match. Takahashi will have to have the match of his life to keep it interesting.

It is cool to see the NEVER Openweight title actually treated like a real Openweight Championship. El Desperado made a challenge to Shingo Takagi at NJPW Dominion and it was quickly accepted. Shingo has been having some great matches recently and this should be no exception.

But the main event is the reason to watch the show. Hiromu had an amazing storyline fighting for the New Japan Cup shot against Naito to just fall short in truly heartbreaking fashion. He then watched in shock as his long-time friend EVIL turned on LIJ. This main event should be an emotional one with two of the most talented wrestlers in New Japan. They seem likely they will continue their current momentum at Sengoku Lord.
