Welcome to the latest edition of AEW Ignite! Last week’s show was the second show performed without fans. We certainly notched some differences as AEW seemed to follow the social distancing guidelines a lot better. It also seems they will need to move out of Daily’s Place in Jacksonville. How will that affect AEW Dynamite going forward? Plus we have the in-ring debut of Lance Archer! Let us see what AEW has in store for us on Wednesday:
Kenny Omega vs. Trent
Kenny Omega successfully defended his AAA Mega Championship last week. But he also holds the AEW Tag Team Championship. It might be time for a new tag team competitor.
Trent has had limited success in singles. His Best Friends team has been in a feud with Death Triangle that seems to have been slowed down by the pandemic. Can one-half of the Best Friends get his team in line for the Tag Title? And will Hangman Page show up to “support” his partner? Time will tell.
Cody & Darby Allin vs. Shawn Spears & Sammy Guevara
It was a long-anticipated announcement when All Elite Wrestling announced the creation of a new title, the TNT Championship early this week. It will be an eight-man single-elimination tournament that will begin on April 8th with the final occurring on May 23rd in Las Vegas to crown the first-ever champion. At least we can hope the final occurs in Las Vegas on May 23rd.
The first two quarterfinal matches will be Cody vs. Shawn Spears and Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara. Both matches have some real history. Shawn Spears begun his heel run when he brutally smashed a chair over Cody’s head at last year’s Fyter Fest. Cody gained his revenge over Spears at AEW All Out in August. What will happen when these two rivals meet before their match for the new title?
The other quarterfinal match is Sammy vs Allin. Darby had his throat smashed by Sammy Guevara earlier this year. He gained his revenge in a good match at AEW Revolution in February. Sammy is coming off a loss to Kenny Omega last week, can he refocus for the TNT Championship?
Professional wrestling has always used tag matches to build their feuds. Tonight’s match should be no different. Will the heels gain momentum and revenge before the tournament starts? Can Cody and Darby Allin put aside their own differences to work together? It should be a fun beginning to the Road to Double or Nothing.
Lance Archer’s In-Ring Debut
It is time for the highly anticipated debut of Lance Archer. All Elite Wrestling has done a very good job building to his debut. The idea of Jake “The Snake” Roberts being his mouthpiece has been brilliant. Roberts has always been a great promo and has shown this with his wonderful work with Cody in recent weeks. If you add in the video vignettes that have shown Lance Archer as a true monster in All Elite Wrestling, it is time for the in-ring debut of Archer, the MurderHawk.
The big question is who will he be facing? Cody, his main target, has said it wouldn’t be him. Who will be the poor and unfortunate wrestler who gets to face the hungry Lance Archer first? I don’t think it is much of a spoiler to say his first opponent is going to lose and lose in a devastating way. Tune in to next week’s column to see what happened on another unique version of AEW Dynamite.
