AEW Dynamite IGNITE for 01/17/24 (Samoa Joe’s First AEW World Title Defense!)

We have a whole host of championship matches scheduled for this Wednesday as All Elite Wrestling makes its North Charleston, South Carolina debut with AEW Dynamite at the North Charleston Coliseum as we preview AEW Dynamite IGNITE for 01/17/24.

Last week, AEW returned home to Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida, where the Young Bucks returned to AEW at the end of a night filled with tag team action and stellar singles match-ups.

We also discovered that Hook would be the first challenger for AEW World Champion Samoa Joe, which raised plenty of discussion online and raises expectations for the match between the two on this Wednesday.

This week’s AEW Dynamite is set to be even better, with plenty of championship matches scheduled!

We’ll Hear From The Young Bucks

Last week at AEW Dynamite’s Homecoming at Daily’s Place, the Young Bucks made their long-awaited return at the conclusion of Sting & Darby Allin’s match with Powerhouse Hobbs & Konosuke Takeshita.

After Sting put Powerhouse Hobbs through a table with a Scorpion Death Drop off the stage and covered him for the three, Tony Schiavone asked Sting about his upcoming retirement at AEW Revolution on March 3, 2024.

Sting, however, did not have time to tell Schiavone who his final match would be against when the Young Bucks’ music hit and Matt & Nick Jackson arrived.

We haven’t seen Matt & Nick Jackson since Full Gear when they lost to the Golden Jets (Chris Jericho & Kenny Omega), and it appears that they’re debuting a new look, sporting suits, and mustaches.

This week, we find out what they have to say about their return and their future plans.

Anna Jay vs. Deonna Purrazzo

Deonna Purrazzo made her presence known on the first AEW Dynamite of 2024 when she interrupted Mariah May after May’s successful AEW in-ring debut. Now Purrazzo looks to pick up a win in her first match on Dynamite since May of 2022 when she was defeated by Mercedes Martinez.

Purrazzo goes into her match on Dynamite with momentum after brushing aside Red Velvet on Collision this past weekend.

She’ll be facing Anna Jay, fresh off her loss to Julia Hart in their TBS Championship match at AEW Battle of the Belts IX in Norfolk, Virginia.

Both competitors will be looking to gain the victory, with AEW Women’s Champion Timeless Toni Storm watching on as she once again joins the commentary team for the match between two potential future challenges for her title.

Christian Cage (c) vs. Dustin Rhodes
(TNT Championship)

Following his victory against Willie Mack on Collision, the Natural Dustin Rhodes’ interview was interrupted by TNT Champion Christian Cage and the rest of the Patriarchy.

Christian Cage told Dustin Rhodes that any friend of Adam Copeland’s is an enemy of his, and now we have a match set for the TNT Championship this Wednesday on Dynamite.

Recently, Dustin Rhodes has also been in tag team action with his Naturally Limitless partner Keith Lee, as well as featuring in a four vs four match with Adam Copeland, Orange Cassidy & Preston Vance against the Mogul Embassy & Lance Archer.

Though Christian Cage wouldn’t have you believe it, this match against Dustin Rhodes is his first defence of his reign with the TNT Championship, having briefly lost the championship to Adam Copeland at AEW World’s End before regaining it due to Killswitch handing his opportunity at the TNT Championship to Christian Cage moments later.

As expected, Christian Cage couldn’t resist mentioning Dustin Rhodes’ father, the legendary Dusty Rhodes, who passed in 2015. This will only add fuel to the fire beneath Dustin Rhodes ahead of the two’s first singles encounter since 2003.

Gates of Agony & Brian Cage (c) vs. Bullet Club Gold
(ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship)

The Ring of Honor World Six-Man Tag Team Champions successfully defended their belts against Lance Archer & The Righteous (Dutch & Vincent) this past weekend on Collision.

As impressive of a defense as it may have been, Prince Nana was the one that got everyone talking after the match when he called out Bullet Club Gold for a match against the Gates of Agony & Brian Cage.

Jay White & the Gunns responded by accepting Prince Nana’s challenge, and now we have a match for the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championships set for Dynamite this Wednesday.

Bullet Club Gold have by no means had an easy run recently. White was part of a losing team at AEW World’s End, and, as Prince Nana pointed out, White could not defeat Swerve Strickland in the Continental Classic.

On top of that, Bullet Club Gold also have issues with Adam Cole’s Undisputed Kingdom stemming from the Devil’s attack on Jay White some months ago.

Prior form aside, this match is sure to be a highlight that could shift the balance of power in both AEW and Ring of Honor.

We’ll Hear From Swerve Strickland

Swerve Strickland may have his eyes firmly locked on Samoa Joe’s AEW World Championship, but as we saw on last week’s Dynamite, things may be far from over between Swerve and Hangman Adam Page.
Though Swerve was the first to stake his claim for a shot at the AEW World Championship, Hangman Adam Page interrupted proceedings, reminding Swerve that there are plenty of others in the mix and ready to take on Samoa Joe.
This Wednesday, we’ll hear from Swerve Strickland, where he’ll announce what his next move will be. Will he go another round with Hangman Adam Page, or will Swerve look to move on to achieve his goal of championship gold?

Samoa Joe (c) vs. Hook
(AEW World Championship)

Samoa Joe’s first defense as AEW World Champion comes against the FTW Champion Hook on this week’s Dynamite.

Last week at Daily’s Place, Samoa Joe’s call for challengers saw both Swerve Strickland and Hangman Adam Page stake their claims for a shot at Joe’s gold.

But with Swerve and Hangman’s story together seemingly not over yet, room was made for Hook to try his hand and become Samoa Joe’s first challenger.

Hook, with his now 29-1 career record, picked up a convincing win over Kevin Matthews on Collision this past weekend.

Hook showed off a variety of suplexes against the much larger Matthews before getting a quick submission victory with the Redrum, something he’ll have to do against the AEW World Champion if he wants to claim the belt.

What To Expect:

  • Will we have new champions crowned this Wednesday?
  • Will there be any more unexpected appearances?
  • Will we learn of any new matches for AEW Revolution?
