The WWE Women’s tag team championships titles have been a little devalued in the sense that they have rarely been defended on television on pay per views until Alexa Bliss and Nikki Bliss came into the picture. The IIconics used every excuse imaginable to keep from having to defend their titles. Four months on SmackDown live, Paige and the Kabuki Warriors Kairi Sane and Asuka have been giving chase but with no pay off due to matches that ended in disqualification or other nefarious means that heels would use to hold on to the championships.
The IIconics have faked more injuries and gotten out of more matches than they have defended the tag team titles. The time for running and ducking is over as the IIconics defended their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships in a Women’s Fatal Fourway Tag Team Elimination match. They faced off against Mandy Rose and Sonia Deville, the Kabuki Warriors, Asuka and Kairi Sane, and Alexa Bliss teamed with Nikki Cross. Heading into this match, the only team with any kind of real momentum for the past few months has been Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss.
Mandy Rose and Sonia Deville haven’t teamed together in a match in quite some time and more recently were in a feud with Ember Moon. The Kabuki Warriors had been hot on the IIconics trail and seemed like the likely tag team to supplant the IIconics and submit themselves as the newest WWE Women’s tag team champions.
As the match got underway, the IIconics took care of business in the ring for a short few minutes before they were the first tag team eliminated. As the match got underway, the IIconics took care of business in the ring for a short few minutes before they were the first tag team eliminated, Which means of the three remaining tag teams, there was going to be new champions crowned at the conclusion of the match.
The action continued on and saw Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville eliminated after Mandy Rose tapped out to Asuka lock. It all boiled down to the teams of Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss versus the Kabuki Warriors. Alexa Bliss picked up the win and new WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship gold as she hit Moment of Bliss on Kairi Sane to pick up the 1-2-3 for herself and Nikki Cross, the new WWE Women’s Tag Team champions.
Having these two as champions adds yet another complex layer to their relationship. For the past few months, anyone who has said anything to Nikki Cross including Bayley and Becky Lynch has told her that she wouldn’t be able to trust Alexa Bliss. After all, look at her past history with the likes of Mickey James and Nia Jax. Nikki Cross has held steadfast in her trust and appreciation for Alexis friendship and now it’s paid off in the form of her first WWE championship gold. Having been a multiple-time champion, Alexa Bliss knows all about the responsibilities and pressure it takes to be and remain a champion in the WWE Women’s division. That is an interesting dynamic that could be explored between these two.
Should Alexa and Nikki not decide to take the IIconics route in terms of defending their Women’s tag team titles, are there are a host of Women’s tag team’s in line ready to challenge them. The Kabuki Warriors, who before Monday night would have been the only logical team to supplant the IIconics should probably be first up to challenge. This also is a prime spot for a team like Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose who’ve been rather stale lately. In the end, what it all boils down to is the fact that the WWE universe has brand new Women’s tag team champions.
