As always, I, “Smart” Mark Blake, have scoured the internet to find the biggest and most interesting stories. So kick back, put your feet up and feast your eyes on this week’s Pro Wrestling Post Week In Review 5/12/19!

Austin Aries To Major League Wrestling

A few short hours ago, Major League Wrestling posted onto their Twitter account that former RoH, WWE and Impact superstar Austin Aries has signed with the company and will debut soon.

The highly decorated wrestler will be adding even more star power to the company. He will be looking to scale the championship ladder as quickly as possible.

This may rub some people up the wrong way. What with Aries’s reputation of “being in it for the money”. But you can’t deny that he’s a huge free agent name that hasn’t been swept up by WWE or AEW. He’ll definitely draw more eyes to the product, that’s for sure. Personally, I would expect him to appear at MLW’s next major event Fury Road on Saturday 1 June.

Torn MCL Sidelines LAX’s Santana

At Impact Wrestling’s “Code Red” event in Queens, NY, Santana suffered a stage 2 torn MCL. LAX’s were facing off against OVE and the New York Wrecking Krew.

On Instagram, he posted a lengthy post where he detailed that the doctor “stressed the importance of rest to avoid further injury”. And that LAX would be canceling all bookings for the next couple of weeks –

It’s been a rough few days for me but PMA is everything in these cases. Like I’ve said before, sometimes we need UNFRIENDLY reminders to take it easy. This past Sunday at Impact’s show in Queens, I suffered a knee injury during our match. I knew something was wrong right away because it was a feeling I’ve never felt before. The next day, I went to see the same exact doc that took care of me at the show. Had an ultrasound done on my knee which showed a stage 2 tear in my MCL. It’s being held together by strands and he’s surprised that it didn’t completely tear during the rest of the match. He stressed the importance of rest if I want to avoid surgery and risk being out for a longer period of time. That’s a risk I’m truly not willing to take, especially at the point we’re at now. I’m FINALLY listening to my body. I have a family who depend on me. It’s stressful and depressing but I’m trying to look at the glass half full and realize that I’ll get to spend more time with them. I want to apologize to all the events we had to call off the next couple of weeks and to all the fans who were expecting to see us. Thank you for your endless support thru every step of our journey. I AM OK AND WILL BE BACK SOON, NASTIER THAN EVER!

This couldn’t come at a worse for the team. They have been picking up steam and have been knocking out great matches left, right and center. I for one will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Santana.

More Wrestling Documentaries On Viceland Soon

Viceland has recently been airing their critically acclaimed “Dark Side Of The Ring” documentary series. Many thought that it would be it for wrestling related programming on the channel. But you’ll be mistaken for thinking that.

A new documentary series called “The Wrestlers”, that actually aired on Viceland in Canada last year will now air in the US (and hopefully globally) on May 22.

The show itself has a Twitter account that can be found here and shows you some of the wrestlers that will be documented. Names such as Matt Riddle, Toni Storm, Kota Ibushi and The Lucha Brothers (Rey Fenix & Pentagon Jr) will be highlighted by the show. Below is the official press release –

Following the much buzzed about wrestling docu-series DARK SIDE OF THE RING, which is posting some of the network’s biggest ratings to date), VICELAND premieres THE WRESTLERS on May 22 at 10pm ET. Hosted by hardcore musician and life-long wrestling fan Damian Abraham (lead singer for the Canadian punk band F**ked Up), the series goes beyond the world of mainstream professional wrestling to dive into the vibrant, fascinating and bizarre subcultures in the wrestling universe around the world. From Lucha Libre in Mexico to the women’s wrestling scene in Japan to “voodoo wrestling” in Congo and countless points between.

This is a big deal as many of the names mentioned have been signed up to major promotions (WWE, AEW, NJPW). It shows the “indie” side of wrestling rather than the polished “professional” side. And if these episodes are anywhere near as good as the Dark Side Of The Ring episodes, then once again Viceland will have another huge smash hit.

NXT Officially Announces Takeover XXV And Location

WWE announced last Monday that next month’s NXT TakeOver will be named TakeOver XXV and will be held at the Webster Arena in Bridgeport, CT on Saturday, June 1.

As you can tell from the Roman numerals, this is TakeOver 25. The 25th installment of NXT TakeOver since they first began airing on the WWE Network in 2014.

Triple H tweeted to confirm that the first two matches confirmed for the event are Io Shirai v Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Championship. And a rematch from NXT TakeOver New York where Adam Cole will have another chance to gain the NXT Championship from current champion Johnny Gargano.

Heavily rumored to make the card is Velveteen Dream vs Tyler Breeze for the NXT North American Championship, Matt Riddle vs Roderick Strong and a fatal four way for the vacant NXT Tag Team Championships where Street Profits will face off against The Forgotten Sons, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch.

Again another TakeOver card looks fantastic. The four-way for the tag titles? I’ll be very much guessing it’s going to be a very physical affair. And Johnny vs Adam Part II?? Oh yes please!!!
