Will Saturday be a happy homecoming for the “Timeless” one as we preview AEW Grand Slam Australia? It is finally time for Grand Slam Australia!
All Elite Wrestling is producing this special card in place of AEW Collision. It will be AEW’s first ever show in “The Land Down Under”.
This show has a strong lineup of five matches. We have three titles on the line, a Brisbane Brawl and a huge tag team match between four of the best wrestlers in AEW.
We even have four Australia wrestlers getting the special home-field advantage on Saturday night. Let us look at what should be a special event in Brisbane.
AEW Grand Slam Australia
Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Buddy Matthews
(AEW Continental Championship)
At last year’s Continental Classic, Kazuchika Okada proved himself to be one of the all-time greatest tournament wrestlers in history.
He defeated Will Ospreay in an epic final to win the 2024 Continental Classic and retain the AEW Continental Championship. Can anyone end the nearly one year title reign of “The Rainmaker”?
At Grand Slam Australia, he will be facing Buddy Matthews. Matthews is at a crossroads. He is trying to find a place in All Elite Wrestling as a member of the newly formed Hounds of Hell.
He even has had some huge singles matches against the likes of Will Ospreay and Adam Cole in recent months, in losing efforts.
Buddy Matthews will get his chance at the AEW Continental Championship in Brisbane. Can Matthews use the home country crowd to his advantage? It would be a special moment if he could pull it off against Kazuchika Okada and win his first singles title in AEW.
AEW Grand Slam Australia
Jay White and Cope vs. Death Riders (Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli)
(Brisbane Brawl)
The Death Riders have been terrorizing All Elite Wrestling for months now. Whenever a wrestler tries to stand up to the group, they will pay for it with a vicious physical attack. Who can possibly stop them?
Enter Cope. Since Cope returned at AEW Worlds End, he had set his sights on Jon Moxley and the AEW World Championship.
On this week’s AEW Dynamite, Cope and Jay White, another wrestler feuding with the Death Riders, stole Moxley’s briefcase holding the AEW World Championship. They were able to get Cope a match for the AEW World Championship at the Revolution pay-per-view.
But the story will not wait until March’s pay-per-view. At Grand Slam Australia, Jay White and Cope will get their hands on the Death Riders yet again.
It will be a Brisbane Brawl. Will the chaos of the match favor The Death Riders? It should be a wild match with high stakes.
AEW Grand Slam Australia
Will Ospreay & Kenny Omega vs. Kyle Fletcher & Konosuke Takeshita
Kenny Omega made his triumphant return to All Elite Wrestling on the January 8th episode of AEW Dynamite. After over a year off, it should have been a triumphant return for “The Cleaner”. But the Don Callis Family had other plans.
They attacked Kenny Omega. And they would have made his comeback a short-lived one if it wasn’t for Will Ospreay making the save. Ospreay certainly has no love loss for the Don Callis Family either.
At Grand Slam Australia, Kenny Omega will team with Will Ospreay against two of the Callis’ Family best, Kyle Fletcher and Konosuke Takeshita.
Fletcher and Takeshita seem to be on the same page. Can Ospreay and Omega, long-time rivals in New Japan, truly work together on Saturday night? If they don’t they could be ripe for a loss.
AEW Grand Slam Australia
Mercedes Moné (c) vs. Harley Cameron
(AEW TBS Championship)
At Wrestle Dynasty, Mercedes Moné claimed the Undisputed British Women’s Championship over Mina Shirakawa. Moné had officially become “Four Belt Moné”. Who could possibly stop her?
Harley Cameron wanted a shot at the AEW TBS Championship. Moné didn’t really seem interested. But Cameron didn’t take no for an answer.
She harassed Mercedes with a Moné puppet and sang multiple songs demanding her shot. Harley Cameron’s finally mind games worked, she will get a shot at the TBS Championship in Brisbane.
Harley Cameron grew up in Gold Coast, Australia. It is less than an hour away from Brisbane. Can Cameron ride the support of the hometown crowd to win the AEW TBS Championship? If she does, Moné will truly “Feel the Wrath”.
AEW Grand Slam Australia
Mariah May (c) vs. “Timeless” Toni Storm
(AEW Women’s World Championship)
It is a match over a year in the making. “Timeless” Toni Storm was a true mentor to Mariah May. As Storm defended the AEW Women’s World Championship, May grew as a competitor.
“Timeless” Toni Storm even supported May as she entered the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. As May won the Tournament, Toni Storm celebrated her victory. That made it even more shocking when Mariah May immediately attacked her former mentor that fateful night.
May defeated Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship title at Wembley Stadium at AEW All In last August.
As Mariah May has defended the title successfully for the last 172 days, a new rookie emerged to challenge her. It was a young, upstart named Toni Storm.
Toni Storm returned last December under her “Rockstar” persona. She acted like a rookie just happy to be in All Elite Wrestling.
After she won a title shot at Maximum Carnage, the ruse was dropped. She was “Timeless” Toni Storm all along. She was just acting so she could get another shot at Mariah May.
Can “Timeless” Toni Storm win her title back? It will certainly require her to keep her emotions in check against her former protégé.
If she can, she will win back her title yet again and do so in front of her home country. It would be some revenge indeed.
