ECW Wrestlepalooza 1998 | ECW Saturday Night RetroView

On May 3rd, 1998 Extreme Championship Wrestling aired another PPV this time its the ECW Wrestlepalooza 1998 event. We had 3 titles (ECW World Tag Team, Television & ECW World Heavyweight) on the line and The Dudley Boyz faced off against Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman.

Tag Team Match

BWO (Blue Meanie & Super Nova) vs. FBI (Little Guido & Tracy Smothers) 

Super Nova & Little Guido trade arm holds and takedowns but Guido stops to taunt. Nova capitalizes with a choke lift into a Manhattan Drop when Tracy Smothers enters, Nova avoids him. Super Nova then gives FBI a bulldog/leg drop combo & which leads to a Blue Meanie tag then Tommy Rich wants a dance-off rematch.

Meanie & Smothers dance then Meanie invites referee John Finnegan to do the same & Meanie declares John the winner so Smothers attacks but FBI runs into each other by accident.

Meanie tricks a confused Guido into giving Smothers a Paisan Elbow then get a wild brawl. Meanie & Nova hand out slams then Smothers stumbles into Finnegan so Finnegan slams him too when Guido complains, Finnegan does the same to him. John even covers for a mock two count after more miscommunication between FBI, Nova sends them outside. He nails a corkscrew plancha then Rich attacks.

This allows the FBI to double-team Nova. Smothers dropkicks him into a Manhattan Drop and a Russian leg sweep. The FBI uses frequent tags and strikes. Nova counters with the Scream Machin. It leads to Meanie’s hot tag. He cleans house with clotheslines and a double-noggin knocker. Everyone brawls, so Nova sends Smothers to the floor for a pescado. Meanwhile, Meanie climbs for a Meaniesault.

Rich distracts him then Meanie misses. Guido then hits Meanie with the flag after two attempts, but Nova is back. He gives Guido the Novacaine for the victory.

Justin Credible vs. Mikey Whipwreck

Mikey Whipwreck throws strikes and attempts a Whippersnapper but Justin Credible avoids it, and they brawl to the floor. Whipwreck then whips Credible into and over the rail. Credible lands on a child in the front row then after a Russian leg sweep into the barricade, they scuffle on the apron. Credible shoves Whipwreck into the rail, and Jason hands Justin a chair. Credible gives Whipwreck a facebuster and a powerbomb on it.

He also knees it into Whipwreck’s face while Jason holds the chair. Whipwreck rallies with pin attempts. Credible turns a Whippersnapper into a reverse DDT then Jason attacks Whipwreck with a backbreaker and puts him on a table when Credible climbs on the guardrail, Whipwreck throws a chair at him but it misses and hits a fan.

Whipwreck then powers Credible into a suplex onto the table before they crawl into the ring for more chair shenanigans. Whipwreck also nails a swinging neckbreaker and a Frankenmikey after some reversals Whipwreck lands a Whippersnapper then here comes Jason’s entourage so they all get hit with Whippersnappers.

Whipwreck gives Chastity one from the top rope then Whipwreck tries to give Credible a That’s Incredible on a chair. Credible reverses it & hits Whipwreck with That’s Incredible on the chair to score the victory.

ECW World Tag Team Titles Match

Chris Candido & Lance Storm (c) vs. The Hardcore Chair Swingin Freaks (Balls Mahoney & Axl Rotten)

The match starts off with Chris Candido & Axl Rotten trading hammerlocks then headlocks follow by wristlocks then takedowns. Lance Storm does the same but he gains the advantage with a low blow and a wheel kick so Candido tags himself in and they argue. The Hardcore Chair Swingin Freaks capitalize with a drop toe hold/leg drop combo then Balls Mahoney tumbles outside on a missed wheel kick but he drops Candido on the rail.

After some miscommunication between Storm & Candido, Rotten nails a somersault plancha when they return, Storm regains control, so Candido tags himself in again, Candido does a stalling suplex that hurts his back. He tags Storm for some relief. Rotten is in trouble. Storm & Candido use frequent tags. Rotten rallies with chops and a sunset flip.

Chris Candido is in trouble when Rotten lands on his crotch so Storm enters for a double flapjack. Rotten turns it into a double DDT and tags Mahoney. Mahoney cleans house and attempts The Nutcracker Suite. Sunny arrives to stop it so Mahoney tries to give her The Nutcracker Suite but it leads to a brawl. Storm & Rotten fight to the floor.

Mahoney nails The Nutcracker Suite on Candido and grabs a chair. Storm knocks it into Mahoney’s face with a springboard dropkick when Storm goes for the cover Candido nails Storm with the chair and steals the win.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. New Jack

New Jack throws his weapons into the ring but Bam Bam Bigelow attacks him in the corners. Bigelow throws strikes but he misses a guitar shot. New Jack answers with cookie sheets and a crutch then Jack places a Godzilla toy on Bigelow’s crotch and hits it with the crutch. Bigelow rolls outside to regroup but Jack joins him. Jack hurts himself with a headbutt.

Bigelow capitalizes with chairs to Jack’s head when they spill into the crowd, Bigelow uses multiple chairs and rams Jack into the walls then Bigelow crashes on a rail with a missed splash. Jack heads for the balcony but the security has to help him. Jack takes a fan’s guitar and falls out of the balcony onto Bigelow.

He knocks himself out in the process. Bigelow recovers first and carries Jack’s limp body to the ring. He rolls him inside for a weak Greetings from Asbury Park to get the win.

Winner: Bam Bam Bigelow (8:27)

Tag Team Match

The Dudley Boyz (Buh Buh Ray & D Von) vs. Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman

The Dudley Boyz & Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman brawl to the floor where Sandman throws a table at Buh Buh Ray Dudley then Tommy Dreamer drapes The Dudleys over the rail for Sandman’s apron leg drop when they return to the ring, Dreamer nails a hangman’s neck breaker on D Von meanwhile, Sandman puts a section of the guardrail into the ring.

Sandman & Dreamer hits a slingshot leg drop/splash combo. Dreamer whips D-Von into the rail but Buh Buh reverses Sandman into it & this aggravates Sandman’s neck injury. Dreamer protects him while the officials load Sandman onto a stretcher.

It leaves Dreamer by himself so The Dudleys attack as they give him a backdrop, a double suplex, double elbows & stereo jumping headbutts. Sign Guy Dudley messes up a powder attack, but he follows with a loaded sign. The Dudleys crotch Dreamer on the rail and do a conchairto since Dreamer is in trouble, Spike Dudley comes to the rescue. Spike hands out Acid Drops onto the rail and Dreamer places D Von in a tree of woe.

Sign Guy & Big Dick Dudley interfere then Dick does the Total Penetration to Dreamer. Buh Buh attempts a Buh Buh Bomb on Spike but he gets a low blow then Spike kicks a chair into D Von’s face but Dick grabs him. Beulah McGillicutty saves Spike with another low blow so The Dudleys threaten her.

Spike stops them and gets hit with a 3D & this gives Sandman the opening to return. He canes The Dudleys & Dreamer & Sandman use canes chairs, and a Double DDT for the victory.

Winners: Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman (11:19)

Television Title Match

Rob Van Dam (c) vs. Sabu

The match begins with some basic chain wrestling and have a standoff. Rob Van Dam takes a mic and says they swerved the fans. He won’t wrestle his best friend. They’re gullible! Jeff Jones demands they fight. RVD & Sabu appear to threaten him but it’s a misdirection. Sabu kicks RVD then he flusters RVD with springboard and somersault moves in and out of the ring.

They follow this with traded holds. Van Dam focuses on Sabu’s leg until they return to the floor. Sabu sets up a table and places RVD on it but RVD moves then hits a triple jump dive into the crowd anyway Sabu also chucks chairs at RVD’s head whenever he takes control. RVD answers with a Van Daminator on the rail but Bill Alonzo won’t hold the chair for him.

They fight on the floor again. RVD nails a somersault plancha. Sabu answers with an Asai Moonsault while RVD is on the railing then they botch a table spot so Sabu throws more chairs at RVD’s head He also puts RVD through a broken table with a Super Frankensteiner. RVD answers with more kicks and apron leg drops then Van Dam gets 2 counts off a Van Daminator and a 5 Star Frog Splash after a monkey flip onto a chair.

Sabu fires back with an Arabian Facebuster. He then gets new table but it has broken legs then he puts Sabu through it with another 5 Star Frog Splash but it only gets a two count. He throws more chairs at RVD’s head then it leads to them trading more near falls then they use a split-legged moonsault and another Arabian Press but the bell rings to signal a time limit draw.

Winner: No One (Time Limit Draw) (30:00) (RVD retains)

ECW World Heavyweight Title Match

Shane Douglas (c) vs. Al Snow

Shane Douglas & Al Snow grapple and trade strikes and takedowns to get this match started follow by Francine crotches Snow and pulls him outside to buy Douglas some time but Snow avoids a baseball slide and crotches Douglas on the rail and the post. They fight at the apron. Douglas drapes Snow on the ropes and dropkicks him to the floor.

Douglas follows with attacks on Al’s neck. Douglas also sets up some chairs, but he can’t get them right. A Manhattan Drop knocks the chairs over then Douglas makes up for it with a powerbomb onto them but it hurts Douglas’ arm again & this allows Snow to turn a backdrop into a DDT.

Snow attempts a Snow Plow but Triple Threat arrives. Al Snow fights them off until Douglas nails a belly 2 belly for only gets a two count. Triple Threat interferes again so Snow does an Asai Moonsault onto them when they return to the ring Douglas rolls through a flying crossbody.

Snow follows with a Snow Plow but it only gets two count as a worried Francine attacks. Snow does the Snow Plow to her and hits Candido with head then after dispatching Douglas’ buddies, Snow lands a sunset flip but Shane hooks the legs to get the victory.

Winner: AND STILL ECW World Heavyweight Champion: Shane Douglas (13:05)
