In most wrestling locker rooms, there is one veteran, one wrestler, that can be known as the conscience of an organization. Someone who can be a moral compass, both in his actions in the ring and dealing with issues in the locker room. In Alberta, this man has been known simply as The Irishmen. The native of Shannon, Ireland, has been one of the most popular wrestlers to come across Alberta Wrestling fans in years. Personally, one of my favourite moments as a production worker was during the Irishmen’s last match before a recent surgery on his shoulder. As a…

This week’s tale is ironically about a man who has flipped wrestling in Edmonton on its ear again. It seems that things are all over the place when it comes to talent in 2019. He is the best hype man in Alberta. When podcasting, one of the things I personally hate to record is “best of” and prediction shows. The reason being, is that it almost guarantees one or two people will be missed or overlooked.  If you take a listen to our Backbreaker Media Honours from this past month here, you will notice one egregious omission.  In talking about…

Sometimes when people watch a movie, relive sports moments, and check out archived wrestling footage, people ask “what if?”  What if Batman and Iron Man went Head-to-head?  What if Gretzky played at the same time as Ovechkin? Or what if Sting and the Undertaker fought in their prime?  Well, in terms of Alberta Wrestling we saw a sample of that this past Friday night, when worlds collide. One of the greatest desires of talent and loyal wrestling fans in Alberta (most notably Edmonton) is the thought of a “supercard”. A night where all local promotions combine together for a showcase…

As 2018 comes to a close, it is time to look back at the matches that stood out to me in Alberta. Now there is such a diverse list of matches that could be considered Match of the Year quality, I could not possibl rank them. But here is a look into what Alberta wrestling has to offer. Canadian Wrestling Coalition – Pride vs. Dylon Stone, August 25 (AVAILABLE ON POWERSLAM TV) This battle was the culmination of a six-month feud, with Pride capturing the Alberta Championship over his former best friend and tag team partner. This match had a…

As we enter the holiday season, it is often used as a time for reflection.  For myself, there was no greater experience than when I became Monster Pro Wrestling General Manager. It was my year as the boss. To explain how it all came together, I need to take you back to last January.  As I mentioned in my previous article, Edmonton was hit with a moratorium on Combat Sports. Pro Wrestling got caught in the wash.  As promoters fought to have the embargo lifted, I joined the fight myself and spoke to the City Council Committee about the issue.…

This week’s Tale is all about what happens when politics get into the wrestling business.  In December 2017, the wrestling landscape in Edmonton received a jolt. One that has had side effects being felt one year later.  In this edition of tales from ringside, we highlight when politics shut down wrestling. News coverage of the Edmonton Community and Public Services Committee Discussing the Combative Sports Ban in Edmonton is available here. Source:  CTV News In June 2017 MMA fighter/boxer Tim Hague passed away in the hospital due to fight-related injuries.  After an investigation into the case, it was determined that…

One of the parts of a wrestling card that seems to have died off in the last few years is the strong promo.  One watches WWE and sees performers try to muddle through lines. They are produced by some writer in the back, and the results are at times painful. Beachballs, “What?” chants and general disinterest seem to be the results from a ten-minute speech. They are from someone who clearly doesn’t believe in what they are saying. As we explore the Duke of Alberta Wrestling. With that being said, one of the things I appreciate the most about Alberta…

Over the last few months, there has been a huge influx of exposure of new talents on the WWE global brand. With the Mae Young Classic coming to a close, and the debut of NXT: UK, a ton of brand-new wrestlers have been given the chance to be seen on one of the world’s most publicized stages. Most people think that most of these talents are basically home-grown. However, with many, that is not the case, as the Alberta pipeline has been one of the major pipelines for strong rosters. Going back to the infamous Hart Dungeon, you have a…

Hello everyone!  My name is Mike Malowany (pronounced Maloney, regardless of how many wrestlers screw it up), and I am the senior engineer at Backbreaker Media, a podcast and video channel covering wrestling in Alberta, Canada.  I want to thank you for checking out my first blog post for www.prowrestlingpost.com.  I will be presenting articles about life in the Alberta Wrestling scene. This coupled with how unique and untapped the product is up here.  In many ways, Alberta Wrestling is the Rodney Dangerfield of Wrestling in Canada… Just doesn’t get any respect.  But in this post, I will give you…
