In a report released by the Wrestling Observer newsletter, Lucha Libre star El Hijo del Fantasma who on competed on Lucha Underground as King Cuerno is slated to join the WWE’s Performance Centre in the Fall as part of the September class.
WWE’s interest in Del Fantasma has apparently been in existence since the he appeared on Lucha Underground. Despite being 35 years of age, the Lucha star is fluent in English and a highly skilled worker as well. It wasn’t until this past March when he was released from his contract with Lucha Underground. Del Fantasma, whose real name is Jorge Alcantar had reportedly had an offer made to him to compete in the WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic in 2016 but despite restrictions from his Lucha Underground contract it wouldn’t have allowed him to compete. Del Fantasma can currently be seen competing with Alberto El Patron’s promotion Nacion Lucha Lucha Libre.
Madison’s Mindset: Del Fantasma’s is one of what is expected to be a large class of talent coming to the WWE Performance Centre this Fall. Cuerno’s contract much like many of the previously contracted Lucha Underground talent couldn’t appear on television thus making competing anywhere a challenge. Among other talents that were affected but released from those contracts include former NXT North America and, United States Champion Ricochet, Ivelisse, and independent wrestling star Joey Ryan.
The addion of El Hijo Del Fantasma shows WWE’s ongoing commitment to reaching a Latino audience as well. With the return of Rey Mysterio, the increased exposure of Andrade and the capitalizing on the popularity of Cruiserweights, Lucha House Party with Lince Dorado, Gran Metalik and Kalisto. It was nearly a year ago when Fantasma lost his mask in a match. He has since been competing without it much like Andrade in the WWE. If all goes well Del Fantasma may likely move transition into the company’s NXT brand.
