AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door 2022 Preview

It is time for All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling to face off in the ring with the AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door 2022 preview! The biggest stars of AEW and NJPW fighting it out for brand supremacy is an exciting moment for pro wrestling fans. While some injuries have hurt part of the build, we have many of the best facing off on Sunday night. So let us look at what should be an enjoyable night in Chicago!

Max Caster and Gunn Club (Billy Gunn, Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn) vs. Yuya Uemura, Alex Coughlin, The DKC & Kevin Knight
(Buy-in Pre-Show)

It is the New Japan Dojo versus the new alliance of the Gunn Club and the Acclaimed on the pre-show on Sunday night. Max Caster is certainly quite popular with impressive raps but is always coming out of his matches on the losing ends of things, more often than not. Can he turn it around on Sunday night?

The New Japan competitors are still part of the New Japan Dojo. Can they pull off an upset and set the tone for the pay-per-view? If they do, it would be a major shocker on Sunday night.

Zack Sabre Jr. vs. ????

It seemed like a dream match-up. Zack Sabre Jr is one of the best technical wrestlers in the world against Bryan Danielson. It would have been a special moment. Sadly, Danielson is not cleared to wrestle on Sunday night. But we were offered an interesting replacement match. A mystery opponent, picked by Danielson,  would face Sabre Jr. on Sunday night. And that mystery opponent would join Blackpool Combat Club as well.

The biggest question heading into Sunday’s who will be the mystery opponent? Some interesting names like Claudio Castagnoli, Johnny Gargano, and Jonathan Gresham have been mentioned as opponents for Sabre Jr. at Forbidden Door. It is hard to predict the opponent, but it will be a wonderful surprise for this pay-per-view.

Bullet Club (Young Bucks and El Phantasmo) vs. Darby Allin, Sting & Shingo Takagi

This was certainly a late addition to the card. The Young Bucks have been leaning into their Bullet Club background for weeks. On last week’s AEW Dynamite, they turned their attention towards Darby Allin and Sting. But they were in for a surprise.

Shingo Takagi, arguably one of the best wrestlers in the world, will join Darby & Sting on Sunday night in a six-man tag team match. If you aren’t familiar with this New Japan wrestler, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Add in the fact Sting is undefeated in AEW; you have to like their chances in this sure-to-be chaotic six-man tag team match.

Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki vs. Eddie Kingston, Wheeler Yuta & Shota Umino

This match is all about Jericho and Kingston’s long-standing rivalry. As they prepare for next week’s Blood & Guts Match, this is one last chance to gain some momentum before that huge night. And since Jericho and Kingston truly seem to hate each other, it should be a true brawl at Forbidden Door.

A wildcard in the match will be Minoru Suzuki. He isn’t exactly a fan of younger talent and will be more than eager to punish Wheeler Yuta and Shota Umino at Forbidden Door. You should expect a wild brawl on Sunday night.

FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler (c) vs. United Empire (Great-O-Khan and Jeff Cobb) (c) vs. Roppongi Vice (Trent Beretta and Rocky Romero)
(Winner Takes All – ROH & IWGP World Tag Team Championship)

It is a chaotic battle for tag team gold in this three-team tag team brawl. United Empire just won the IWGP World Tag Team Championship on June 12th at NJPW Dominion. FTR won the ROH Tag Team titles at Supercard of Honor on April 1st. On Sunday night, both tag titles will be on the line in a winner-take-all brawl.

FTR are certainly one of the hottest tag teams in the world today. But can they overcome the talented teams of United Empire and Roppongi Vice? It is hard to say, but it could be a true show stealer with some truly huge stakes.

Pac vs. Miro. vs. Clark Connors vs. Malaki Black
(AEW All-Atlantic Championship)

It is time for a new championship! The AEW All-Atlantic Championship will be decided for the first time at Forbidden Door. It is three AEW wrestlers (Pac, Miro, and Malaki Black) with the last-minute NJPW replacement (Clark Connors). Who walks away with the beautiful new title?

It comes down to who needs the title more. Miro is a former TNT Champion. Connors is in his biggest match to date. Can Pac and Malaki Black win a much-needed first time in AEW? It should be a wild match with four competitors desperate for some gold.

Thunder Rosa (c) vs. Toni Storm
(AEW Women’s World Championship)

At St. Patrick’s Day Slam 2022, Thunder Rosa finally won the AEW Women’s World Championship. It has been the most exciting reign for Rosa, but she has put on some quality defenses as the champion. She faces one of her toughest test to date against Toni Storm.

It certainly is an interesting choice to have an all-AEW match on the card. But both competitors are among the best the division has to offer. Can Storm pull it off, or will Rosa build her impressive resume? It could be a dark horse match of the night for sure.

Will Ospreay (c)  vs. Orange Cassidy
(IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship)

This certainly is one of the most unexpected title matches at Forbidden Door. Orange Cassidy, the laziest man in pro wrestling, returned from injury to challenge Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. It certainly is a clash of styles.

While it seems like a mismatch to have the high-flying Ospreay versus Cassidy, we know that Orange has a lot of skill in the ring. If he wants to try, he can be a great wrestler. With the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship on the line, it seems Orange Cassidy will put in full effort on Sunday night. If he does, he might just win the title.

Jay White (c) vs. Adam Cole vs. Kazuchika Okada vs. Hangman Page
(IWGP World Heavyweight Championship)

This match has been building since AEW Double or Nothing. Hangman Page wanted a shot against arguably the best wrestler in the world, Kazuchika Okada. But at NJPW Dominion, Jay White shocked the world by defeating Okada and winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. White and his friend Adam Cole had been mocking Page since that show. Then Okada shocked the world to show up and even the odds on this week’s AEW Dynamite.

It leads to a huge Fatal 4 Way for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Forbidden Door. These are four of the most talented wrestlers AEW, and New Japan have to offer. It is going to be hard to pick a winner in this match, but just having these four together will make it a special match. And with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship on the line, they will go all out on Sunday night.

Jon Moxley and Hiroshi Tanahashi

Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
(Interim AEW World Championship)

The main event is certainly an unexpected one, but it could be a classic match-up. CM Punk was all set to fight the legendary Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door. That is until the summer of injuries stuck down CM Punk with a foot injury. Of course, he won’t give up the title, but it created an opening for an Interim AEW World Championship match.

After some qualifying matches, we had two competitors left to fight for the title at Forbidden Door. It is Jon Moxley versus Hiroshi Tanahashi. They never had the chance to fight in New Japan before the Pandemic. Moxley has always wanted a match with one of the best ever in Tanahashi. The Ace is 45 years old now but is still one of the best in the world. It should be a great match to end a fun pay-per-view.
