AEW’s decision to do this ushers in an alternative championship. The company’s decision to do so appears reminiscent of the days of World Championship Wrestling and their Television Championship. While neither party has come forward to suggest that, one hope’s that is part of the motivation for the title. As many fans are already aware TNT was previously home to World Championship Wrestling. The companies television title was defended regularly. In doing so it was actively used as part of programming in its early days. However, as the years passed the WCW Television title didn’t necessarily serve a purpose. With the World, the United States and Cruiserweight Champions defended regularly, the TV title was ‘retired’.

Cody’s continued respect and admiration for WCW (an operation his father was actively a part of) is evident.
