NXT Inquisition for 10/16/19 (Dunne vs Priest)

Last week’s episode of NXT was eventful, to say the least. From a Cruiserweight Championship change to a showdown between KUSHIDA, who is out for approximately a month following a fracture, and WALTER, NXT is firing on all cylinders. What does this week’s show have in store? Let’s dive deep in this edition of NXT Inquisition with the in-ring return of a former NXT Champion!

Match 1: Tommaso Ciampa vs. Angel Garza

Ciampa evades a quick attack by Garza, who keeps a quick pace. Ciampa kicks away a handshake attempt and eats an enziguri in response. Ciampa pulls Garza to the outside and tosses him into the barricade before pushing him over the stairs, taunting him after. Back in the ring, Ciampa goes for the Fairytale Ending, which Garza escapes from. Garza dropkicks Ciampa against the apron and sends him to the outside. Garza follows up with a suicide dive to the outside before rolling Ciampa back inside.

Garza hits a missile dropkick before tearing away his pants to reveal trunks underneath. Ciampa quickly attacks him in the corner, stomping away before following up with a knee strike. Ciampa takes the fallen pants of Garza and attacks them as well! Ciampa catches Garza with Willow’s Bell, his apron DDT, for the 1… 2… 3!

Winner: Tommaso Ciampa

Following Ciampa’s victory, The Undisputed Era make their way to the ring. Ciampa sits down in the ring, signature crutch in hand, as The Undisputed Era circle the ring. NXT Tag Team Champion Kyle O’Reilly tosses a USB drive to Mauro Ranallo, telling him to “take a look.” They then exit ringside, staring down Ciampa all the while.

After the commercial, the contents of the USB drive are played. It shows The Undisputed Era, who show an unconscious Velveteen Dream they attacked earlier. Cole warns Ciampa and Finn Balor that the same will happen to them if they get in their way.

Match 2: Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan vs. Imperium (Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel) (w/Alexander Wolfe)

Burch and Aichner start things off, Aichner cinching in a headlock early on. Burch lands a shoulder tackle before tagging in Lorcan, the two hitting stereo shoulder blocks on Aichner. Lorcan tags in Burch, but Aichner takes control, tagging Barthel. Burch catches a flying Barthel with a headbutt, following up with a missile dropkick! Barthel tosses Burch into the corner and follows up with a basement dropkick before cutting to commercial. The show returns to Barthel in control of Burch, who starts to take control. Lorcan is tagged in and he hits a series of uppercuts to Aichner, following up with a vaulting crossbody. Lorcan tags in Burch and leaps over the top rope on Imperium!

Lorcan and Burch hit tandem offense on Aichner for the near fall! Burch tags in Lorcan for another double team maneuver, but Barthel breaks things up. Lorcan and Aichner exchange chops in the ring. Lorcan misses a back elbow in the corner, giving Imperium the advantage. Barthel hits a dive on Burch to the outside while Aichner hits a springboard moonsault on Lorcan for the two-count! The match ends with Imperium hitting Lorcan with the European Bomb for the 1… 2… 3!

Winners: Imperium

Aichner, Barthel, and Wolfe pose in the center of the ring. The show shifts to a video package featuring Johnny Gargano, highlighting his various accomplishments in NXT. Gargano is interviewed backstage regarding Ciampa, saying that he doesn’t know how he currently feels about him until he sees him in person.

Match 3: Io Shirai vs. Kayden Carter

Shirai and Carter showcase athleticism, evading maneuvers and pinfall attempts between one another. Carter catches Shirai with a basement dropkick. Shirai retreats to the outside and blocks a running apron kick from Carter. Shirai hits a springboard dropkick into the ring for a two-count. Shirai blocks a pin attempt, but Carter catches her with a back sweep and kick. Carter executes a rolling pin attempt followed by another kick. Shirai catches another roll attempt, hitting a big German suplex! Shirai lands the moonsault for the 1… 2… 3!

Winner: Io Shirai

Following the match, Shirai grabs the microphone, saying that neither Rhea Ripley nor Bianca Belair will challenge Shayna Baszler. This brings out Ripley, who steps up to Shirai. Ripley takes her mic, saying that last week, Belair ran her mouth. Next week, Ripley plans to put her in her place. She also tells Shirai that she has no problem shutting her up, too. Shirai yells in Japanese before rolling out of the ring, Ripley standing tall.

Last week, Boa lost a quick match to Cameron Grimes before suffering a hellacious attack by Killian Dain. Tonight, Boa seeks revenge. Next, NXT General Manager William Regal informs the audience that Velveteen Dream won’t be able to compete for some time due to the attack he sustained at the hands of The Undisputed Era. Nonetheless, Roderick Strong will defend the NXT North American Championship against the winner of tonight’s match between Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic!

Match 4: Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic

Dijakovic jaw jacks to begin. They tackle one another, neither man backing down. Lee lifts Dijakovic by the arm and hits a massive shoulder block to knock him down. Lee continues to focus on the arm, executing a splash across it. Lee maintains control of the arm, but Dijakovic grabs the rope, finally gaining the upper hand. Dijakovic hits a big clothesline on Lee for the two-count before we cut to commercial. We return to Dijakovic still in control of Lee. However, Lee starts to fire back, blocking Dijakovic’s strikes. Lee hits a series of punches, cornering Dijakovic, before landing a body splash!

Lee hits a stiff left hand followed by a big pounce for a two-count. Dijakovic escapes a slam attempt by Lee, executing a choke bomb! 1… 2… Lee kicks out! Dijakovic hoists Lee on the top turnbuckle. Lee slaps Dijakovic off the top and hits a frog splash across his opponent’s arm! Lee hits the Spirit Bomb! Before he can get the pin, Dijakovic rolls to the outside. Lee rolls him back inside and hits a corner forearm. Dijakovic fires back with a cyclone kick to the face! 1… 2… Lee kicks out again!

Both men clearly spent exchange strikes. Dijakovic goes for a suplex, but Lee counters with a deadlift suplex of his own! 1… 2… Dijakovic gets the shoulder up! Dijakovic catches Lee on the top turnbuckle with a superkick. Dijakovic hoists Lee in the electric chair position but is hit with a poisonrana by Lee! 1… 2… Dijakovic kicks out! Both men are on the top turnbuckle once again. Lee catches Dijakovic in the hurricanrana position. Before another move can be executed, Strong hits the ring, attacking Lee and Dijakovic!

Winner: N/A

Regal informs Strong that he will still defend his championship. Next week, Strong will face Lee and Dijakovic in triple threat action, the title on the line! During the commercial, an irate Undisputed Era shout at Regal, who simply leaves the building without acknowledging them.

Match 5: Matt Riddle vs. Bronson Reed

They exchange a fist bump in a show of respect. They soon start to exchange strikes. Riddle hits a knee strike followed by a series of kicks in the corner. Riddle lands an exploder suplex followed by a penalty kick for a two-count. Reed blocks the Bro-Ton and hits a big senton of his own! Riddle fires back with a series of strikes and lands a Bro To Sleep! Riddle lands a massive powerbomb followed by the Final Flash for a close pinfall!

Riddle goes for the Floating Bro, but Reed catches him with a sit-out powerbomb! Reed brings down the straps of his singlet. Riddle cinches in the sleeper hold. Reed escapes, bur Riddle catches him with the Bro-Derek for the 1… 2… 3!

Winner: Matt Riddle

Riddle and Reed exchange a fist bump post-match. From there, we cut to a video package featuring Belair, making it clear that she wants to face Baszler.

Match 6: Taynara vs. Tegan Nox

Nox goes for a rollup attempt early in the match. Nox hits a single-leg dropkick for a two-count. Taynara lands a pump kick, causing Nox to fall to the outside. Taynara rolls Nox back into the ring and kicks the arm. Taynara hits a series of rolling takedowns followed by double knees in the corner. Nox fights back with a headbutt as she starts to take control. Nox hits the chokeslam followed by a running elbow in the corner. Nox lands a corner senton and a diving crossbody! Nox wins the match with The Shiniest Wizard for the 1… 2… 3!

Winner: Tegan Nox

Post-match, Nox is interviewed before being greeted by a longtime friend, Dakota Kai. Before Nox can get a word out, Baszler makes her way to the ring followed by Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke. Baszler warns Nox not to challenge her, saying that Kai knows what it’s like to be in the ring with her. Baszler also says Nox is “running out of limbs to rehab.” Nox challenges Baszler for the championship, to which Baszler declines before making her exit alongside her friends.

After the commercial, the show plays a video package featuring Balor. He says he retraced his steps to find his heart. Next week, his future will be his past.

Match 7: Boa vs. Killian Dain

Boa starts things fast with a series of strikes on Dain, including kicks and a stiff dropkick. On the outside, Dain lands a running crossbody on Boa. Dain rolls Boa in the ring, where he continues the attack with elbow drops. Dain stomps on Boa in the corner and strongly whips him into the other corner. Dain hits a suplex and cinches in a chinlock. Boa starts to fight back but is leveled with a lariat by Dain! He hits a senton followed by not one, two, but three Vader Bombs. Dain cinches in a seated abdominal hold for the submission victory!

Winner: Killian Dain

Following this match, a video package plays featuring last week’s NXT Cruiserweight Championship match. In this contest, Rush defeated Gulak to win the title. Rush considers himself the greatest cruiserweight and there are certain to be many Superstars looking to unseat him.

Next week, Ripley and Belair will square off in singles action!

Match 8: Pete Dunne vs. Damian Priest

As Dunne makes his entrance, he confronts Dain, snapping his fingers in a heated exchange! Once the bell rings, both men stop to stare one another down. Priest takes control of the wrist, Dunne reversing with a headlock. Priest lands a leaping elbow strike on Dunne followed by a series of kicks. Dunne executes a clothesline and manipulates the fingers of Priest, stomping on the elbow! Dunne continues to focus on the hand as the action spills to the outside. Dunne stomps on Priest’s arm on the ring steps! On the apron, Priest kicks Dunne to the mat. The action returns to the ring, Priest hitting Dunne with a stiff forearm before cutting to commercial.

As the show returns, Dunne catches Priest on the top turnbuckle with a superplex! They exchange strikes, Dunne seemingly getting the better of the exchange. Dunne hits a dropkick to the knee. Dunne hits a snap German suplex, a stomp to the hands, followed by a kick to the head. On the outside, Dunne wipes out Priest with a flying moonsault! Back in the ring, lands a sit-out powerbomb for a two-count! Dunne takes Priest’s arms and stomps away at him. Dunne catches Priest with an armbar, but Priest makes it to the ropes.

Priest tosses Dunne into the ring post

..and follows up with a crucifix powerbomb for a two-count! With Dunne on the outside, Priest executes a somersault senton! Dunne counters a German suplex attempt, kicking Priest in the back of the head. Priest catches Dunne on the top rope with a cyclone kick followed by a Frankensteiner! Priest hits a sit-out chokeslam! 1… 2… Dunne kicks out! Weakened, both men exchange strikes in a heated flurry. Priest catches Dunne with a huge clothesline and goes for The Reckoning. Dunne counters for the Bitter End, but Priest evades as well! Once again, they continue to exchange and counter strikes!

Priest gets the knees up as Dunne attempts a moonsault. As Priest hoists his opponent, Dunne wrenches the fingers. The referee is caught in this exchange, allowing Priest to hit a low blow! Priest capitalizes with The Reckoning for the 1… 2… 3!

Priest celebrates on the entrance ramp as this week’s episode of NXT comes to a close.
