Earlier today, it was announced that Cody and Sammy Guevara would face off in the first match on AEW on TNT. All Elite Wrestling broke the news on Twitter, stating that the AEW Executive Vice President would square off against the former AAA World Cruiserweight Champion. It has not been announced where this match will fall on the show – opener, middle, or main event – but it’s safe to expect more details in the weeks to come.
I was excited this was the match selected.
To have a young & hungry opponent who has no ceiling when it comes to pro-wrestling. Going forward not backwards. https://t.co/mZglJg5lSs

Since the announcement of AEW earlier this year, Cody has been involved in each major event. At Double or Nothing, in May, he defeated his brother Dustin Rhodes in what many viewers considered the match of the night. The following month, at Fyter Fest, Cody wrestled Darby Allin to a no-contest when Shawn Spears interfered, taking out the latter with a chair shot to the head. At Fight for the Fallen, Cody teamed with his brother against The Young Bucks in the main event.
Meanwhile, as a relatively new face, Guevara has been making his way up the ladder in AEW. At the Double or Nothing pre-show, “The Buy-In,” Guevara wrestled Kip Sabian in a fast-paced bout. His next AEW match would take place at Fight for the Fallen when he teamed with Spears and Maxwell Jacob Friedman to defeat Allin, Jimmy Havoc, and Joey Janela.
AEW will hold the first episode of its weekly TV show on TNT, October 2nd.
If you don’t know,
October 2nd you will. #BestEver https://t.co/Ahc5x3L3bP— sammy guevara (@sammyguevara) July 30, 2019
Sutter’s Synopsis: On the surface, this may seem like a strange match to promote. While Cody is well-known, not only for his recent work in the independent scene but his years of service in World Wrestling Entertainment, Guevara isn’t nearly as popular around the world. Though Guevara’s time in AAA made him a popular name in Mexico, he’s not as notable on an international level.
It can be argued that this is where Cody/Guevara can prove most advantageous. Though his match with Allin at Fyter Fest ended without a solid conclusion, it was an exciting contest that did many things right, including elevating Allin to a higher level of popularity. Many viewers went into this match not knowing who Allin was, only to come away with respect and admiration for the young wrestler. It stands to reason, then, that Guevara could benefit in a similar fashion.
Keep an open mind when it comes to Cody vs. Guevara this coming October. You may be in for a surprise as it is the first match announced on AEW on TNT.
