Battle of the Belts for 4/16/22 (ROH World Championship Defense)

On Saturday, April 16th, AEW presents the Battle of the Belts for 4/16/22. This program features three title matches only taking. These matches are part of a week-long series of shows where all AEW titles have been on the line, minus the AEW TBS Championship. What is interesting to note is that Cargill has only defended her title a handful of times during her 100+ day reign.

But as a whole, all of the current title holders haven’t defended their titles all that often throughout their reigns. Hangman Page has had a handful of title defenses during his five-month plus reign. The concept of having Battle of the Belts event taking place is a fun concept. It certainly encourages more frequent title matches and allows fans to be more invested in the championship and its reign.

Which Battle of the Belts match are you most looking forward to seeing?

Scorpio Sky (c) vs. Sammy Guevara

This will be Sky’s second title defense in his reign as champion. Fans will recall his win over Wardlow was marred with underhanded shenanigans and led to Sky retaining. To ensure that as talented as Sky is that the reign continues, he’ll have to find a way to walk out of Saturday’s event still as the TNT Champion. It’s pretty evident that Ethan Page, Dan Lambert, and potentially Paige Van Zant will all play a part in this match.

So while Tay Conti will have the back of Sammy, the odds are fairly stacked against him. If they are allowed to simply compete, it could be a very telling match. These two men are separated by 11 years. Those eleven years doesn’t tell the story of how far Scorpio Sky had come to be at this point in his career. Sky has the champion’s advantage going into this match. As many know, he doesn’t have to beat Guevara to hold onto the title.

In Rosa’s first title defense, she faces the former champion, Nyla Rosa. This is the second battle of the belts event in 2022, with the AEW Women’s title on the line. While the match on paper is new in that Rosa is defending the title against Rose, something about this all seems too familiar. In the case of Rose, she will often contend or challenge for the title or someone looking to compete for the women’s title.

For Rosa, her time as champion has already elapsed 30 days at this point without a title defense. So in saying that, their match should be treated as a big deal to quantify holding it this amount of time without defending it. Will Rose prove to be a threat to the new champion? The biggest question is how much time these two will be given on the show.

Ring of Honor World Championship
Jonathan Gresham (c) vs. Dalton Castle

In Gresham’s first official title defense, he faces another longtime member of the Ring of Honor roster. Dalton Castle is a former ROH World Champion himself. In stepping into the ring with the octopus, Castle faces a man that carries as much honor in the ring as he does outside of it. At ROH’s Supercard of Honor, Gresham became the undisputed ROH Champion defeating Bandido.

The biggest obstacle that Gresham will likely have to overcome are the mind games that Castle brings with him when he comes to the ring. Gresham will also have to avoid any potential distractions outside the ring as the match is played out. Castle is known to come to the ring with an entourage. So Gresham will either proceed cautiously or simply bring the fight to the challenger.

What to Expect

  • The champion coming out of AEW Rampage this week could address their next threat for the title
  • Further, build to next week’s episodes of Dynamite and Rampage
  • More discussion regarding Tony Khan’s big announcement next week.
