AEW Double or Nothing 2020 Preview

It is time for AEW Double or Nothing 2020! It will be a bittersweet moment for me. I was going to be at Double or Nothing in person for a second straight year. But as usual, the pandemic ruins everything. AEW has done an admirable job of putting on exciting shows and building a strong card in this empty arena pandemic world. Let’s see how well they do with their first pandemic PPV…

AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
#1 Contenders Match for the AEW Tag Team Championship
Private Party vs. Best Friends

This pre-show match-up is certainly a surprise. The Best Friends have been quite active in recent months on AEW Dynamite. They, as a team or as singles wrestlers, have been putting on some great performances against some of the best that AEW has to offer.

Private Party hasn’t really appeared on AEW in recent months. It seems the pandemic has limited them to some appearances on “Being the Elite”. This should be a great way to kick off the show but it is hard to see Best Friends losing here.

Shawn Spears vs. Dustin Rhodes

This was a quick developing feud for Double or Nothing. The feud really didn’t start until this week’s Dynamite when Spears hosted the “Shawn Spears News”. The news program announced Dustin Rhodes’ retirement and threw in some cheap shots at “The Natural”. I guess that leads to a match!

Shawn Spears has had a lot of bad luck against Cody in recent months. It makes some sense he would like some revenge against Cody’s older brother. It seems both will be desperate for a pay-per-view win. But this has to set up Spears to finally get a big win right?

MJF vs. Jungle Boy

I am just happy that MJF survived his career-threatening injuries. He has survived weeks away with his hangnail injury to return to AEW Dynamite. It isn’t surprising he is back to his excellent heel ways after his injury scare.

His opponent on Saturday is Jungle Boy. Much like MJF, he has been on the shelf during the pandemic. These two are the future of AEW and some of the better young talents in professional wrestling. It would seem the cocky MJF should pick up the victory and move on to greater things.

Britt Baker vs. Kris Statlander

If AEW has had an MVP during the pandemic it is clearly Britt Baker. She has gone from a dull babyface to one of the best heels in wrestling. I guess being a condescending jerk will help you get to that place. But she does like Tony Schiavone.

Kris Statlander had a lot of momentum before the pandemic. She was involved in the Women’s Title feud. Statlander is a very talented wrestler but she seems to be coming against a white-hot heel. Hopefully Baker is fine after an injury scare on AEW Dynamite, it would be a shame to see her great work meet an unfortunate end.

AEW Women’s Championship
No DQ/Countout
Nyla Rose (c) vs Hikaru Shida

Shida has been on quite a roll in recent months. She has proven herself to be one of the most talented wrestlers in the company. Defeating everyone on the Women’s roster to claim a well-earned title shot.

Nyla Rose has, like a lot of people, been away from the company for a while. AEW hasn’t always had the best women’s division but Rose has been pushed like the unstoppable heel that she is. It is hard to say who will win the match but the unique stipulation seems to favor Rose’s style better. This could be a sleeper match of the card.

Casino Ladder Match
Winner receives a future AEW World Championship opportunity
Darby Allin vs Colt Cabana vs Orange Cassidy vs Rey Fenix vs Scorpio Sky vs Kip Sabian vs Frankie Kazarian vs Luchasaurus vs ???

This is going to be fun. The chaotic mixture of battle royal with a ladder match should lead to these nine competitors pulling out all the stops. I would expect Rey Fenix and Scorpion Sky to fly off the ladder at some point.

The mystery ninth competitor will be fun as well. Will it be a recently released WWE competitor? Could it be a surprising newcomer? Will it be a legend? It is hard to say but I would still think Darby Allin is the clear favorite. I mean he has to win the big one sometime right? This seems like the right time in what could be the match of the night.

AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
Stadium Stampede Match
Matt Hardy & The Elite vs The Inner Circle

This is a solid replacement for the Blood & Guts Match we may not see for a very long time. Matt Hardy has set his sights on Chris Jericho since his arrival in AEW. It certainly didn’t help that the Inner Circle destroyed Vanguard-1. That is a dangerous choice to bring out an angry Matt Hardy.

The Empty Stadium should be a lot of fun. It will allow them to film a true street fight brawl in a massive NFL Stadium. It seems The Inner Circle has had the upper hand for a majority of this feud. Can The Elite with the return Hangman Page finally get some revenge?

AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
TNT Championship
Cody vs Lance Archer

This is the best feud by far heading into the pay-per-view. Lance Archer with major help from the amazing promo work from his manager Jake “The Snake” Roberts, has set their sights of Cody since joining the company. It just made sense these two would make it through the grueling TNT Championship tournament to face each other in the final. But who will become the first-ever Champion?

Lance Archer has been an unstoppable monster since joining the company. He would make a worthy first-ever TNT Champion. But can Cody, the most popular babyface in the company, afford to lose another major match? It might be hard for him to recover from that. I know this is my most anticipated match of the entire card.

And Mike Tyson?!? Presenting the winner with the championship?!? What a coup!

AEW Double Or Nothing 2020
AEW World Championship
Jon Moxley (c) vs Brodie Lee

I have to say that this hasn’t been the best build for a World Title match. Brodie Lee has been excellent since becoming the “Exalted One” of the Dark Order. He has destroyed everyone in his path and has set his sights of Moxley. But a lot of his mind games seem to be just stealing Moxley’s title belt. That really isn’t that intimidating.

Moxley really is just getting started his reign at the top. It would seem too soon to have him drop the title after his compelling title chase. But would that do a lot of damage to Brodie Lee’s character? These two should put on a great match on Saturday night. It could be the best pro wrestling show in the Empty Arena era.
