AEW Collision for 08/07/23 (CM Punk vs Samoa Joe IV)

This week’s AEW Collision leads the company into an exciting summer that will feature Blood and Guts on July 19th as well as All In 2 at Wembley Stadium in a few weeks as we preview AEW Collision for 08/07/23.
As well as this, it has been an exciting week for wrestling as a whole, with stars such as Moxley and Kingston competing in Tokyo for NJPW Strong, and AEW ends the week with the biggest card for Collision so far.
This episode features many huge matchups with a heated tag team title eliminator, as well as three semi-finals for the Owen Hart Cup tournament that include a rematch from the ROH Women’s division, an intense matchup between two former friends, and a fourth chapter being added to a rivalry that has defined both men.

AEW Collision for 08/07/23
FTR vs. Juice Robinson and Jay White
(AEW World Tag Team Championship Eliminator)

Ever since Double or Nothing 2023, the Top Guys have been repeatedly bashing heads with King Switch and Rock Hard, whether it was in brawls and promos or on opposite sides of multi-man tags on Collision. Finally, FTR and BC-Gold will finally face-off with the stipulation that if Robinson and White won, they receive a tag team championship match.
From the birth of Collision, both Jay White and Juice Robinson have been able to shine with their scathing promo skills to get under peoples’ skin, with their main targets being the world tag team champions. After going back and forth in multi-man matches, brawls and wars of words, all four men will square off in tag action, but the Bullet Club wanted something back to have this match: a tag title shot on the line if they win this match.
BC-Gold not only have the competition and tag supremacy on the line, but also a tag title shot. So, Will FTR finally get their payback over the devious outsiders after weeks of anguish by beating them down for the victory? Or will Bullet Club Gold use their sneaky tactics and counter-wrestling to get a win over FTR to gain a chance to win their first championships in AEW?

AEW Collision for 08/07/23
Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Ricky Starks
(Men’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament Semi-Finals)

On last week’s Collision episode, Ricky Starks silenced his rivals, BC Gold, by taking out a top member in ‘Rock Hard’ Juice Robinson. This week, he will meet an old enemy who caused the collapse of Team Taz in Powerhouse Hobbs, which looks to be an intense semi-final between two former friends.
Ever since the separation of Team Taz, both Hobbs, and Starks have had their ups and downs, with Hobbs losing the TNT Championship to Wardlow and Starks losing out on his opportunity for the AEW World Title.
However, both can get back on track once again with a victory here, but one must take out the other in order to reach the finals for a chance at the top. Both men are 1-1 against each other, so this match may also be seen as the tie-breaker.
The winner of this match will face Samoa Joe or CM Punk in the finals for the Owen Hart Cup. So, will Hobbs boulder his way through his old tag partner and to the finals for a shot at holding the Owen Hart Cup? Or will Absolute Starks get a win above the man that betrayed him a year ago to advance in the tournament on a quest for greatness?

AEW Collision for 08/07/23
Athena vs. Willow Nightingale
(Women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament Semi-Finals)

The Owen Hart Cup will feature a huge rematch from the reinvention of Ring of Honor in the semi-finals as the ROH Women’s World Champion will face off against the hard-hitting Willow Nightingale for the opportunity to enter the finals for the Owen Hart Cup.
Athena and Nightingale have faced off one time before on the second episode of the new ROH TV in an intense title match; despite Willow’s tough efforts, Athena escaped the matchup with the win and her title.
Ever since, the Power Babe has grown, becoming the first NJPW Women’s Strong Openweight Champion, as well as picking up some huge wins over EMI Sakura and Mercedes Monè. With more experience, the War Goddess will have a tougher matchup this time around on Saturday night.
The winner of this match will face Skye Blue, Britt Baker, or Ruby Soho. So, will the War Goddess carry on her hot streak by getting another victory over Nightingale and potentially adding more gold to her collection? Or will the Power Babe get her win back from the ROH Women’s World Champion to advance to the finals of the tournament?

AEW Collision for 08/07/23
CM Punk vs. Samoa Joe IV
(Men’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament Semi-Finals)

After 18 years, CM Punk and Samoa Joe will look to add another instant classic to their rivalry saga when the Best in the World goes one-on-one with the ROH TV Champion, the Samoan Destroyer, for the opportunity to be in the tournament finals for the prestigious Owen Hart Cup.
The last time these two wrestling icons battled, it was for the ROH World Championship at All-Star Extravaganza II, where Samoa Joe choked out Punk to get the victory over his adversary.
Despite not being in the same ring for over 15 years, the animosity was still the same, shown clearly in their encounters in the six-man battle during the first main event of Collision.
Despite the many times these men shared the ring with one another in ROH, CM Punk has never pinned or submitted Samoa Joe, which is a strong advantage the ROH TV Champion has over his opponent.
CM Punk, however, has the confidence against Joe due to taking him to an hour-long draw twice in 2004, as well as the motivation to represent the Hart family by winning the trophy. Joe will look to use his striking ability and size to muscle around Punk and beat him down in order to submit him, whereas Punk will look to utilize the headlock once again to tire the Samoan out to use his quickness advantage and kicks to knock the bigger man down, revisiting their strategies from ROH.
The winner of the match will face either Powerhouse Hobbs or Ricky Starks in the finals. So, will the Samoan Submission Machine utilize his power and technical ability that has kept him ROH TV Champion for over a year to keep his undefeated streak against Punk and move to the finals? Or will CM Punk finally get a victory over an old foe from Ring of Honor to get one step closer to representing the Hart family and getting some gold back in AEW?

What To Expect:

  • What else does the House Of Black have in store for Andrade El Idolo?
  • Who will step up as the next challenger to the TBS Championship?
  • How will Christian respond to Shawn Spears’ TNT Title challenge last week?
  • Will tension continue to build between Jay White and CM Punk?
