#NEWS Ospreay Cleared to Return to G1 Competition

Earlier this week, we reported on Will Ospreay suffering an injury at the G1. This caused him to miss a day of competition in the NJPW G1 Climax tour, though it was not known at the time if this would affect his tournament participation. It was announced today via Twitter that Ospreay has been cleared and his scheduled match on July 18th with Kota Ibushi will go on as planned.

With Ospreay’s history of injuries, fans were worried over whether this would derail the Assassin’s banner year. In 2019, he became the first person in NJPW history to compete in all three major singles tournaments. He also defended the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship in Australia for the first time in company history. Ospreay was also the winner of 2019’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The final match with Dragon Lee is surely a match of the year candidate.
Following the news, Ospreay had this to share:

The scheduled Ibushi and Ospreay will be the main event of this show, stacked with Block A competition. Other matches scheduled for Korakuen Hall are EVIL versus SANADA, KENTA versus Lance Archer, Hiroshi Tanahashi versus Zack Sabre Jr., and Kazuchika Okada versus Bad Luck Fale. All of the G1 Climax action will be available to watch live and on-demand on NJPW World!

Wagner’s Words of Wisdom: It’s a sigh of relief that Will’s injury was not serious enough to disrupt G1 tournament matches. He’s had an impressive year and it would be horrible to see it derailed now. It’s also another feather in his cluttered cap to be on the main event with names like ZSJ, Tanahashi, and Okada also on the bill. We all look forward to Ospreay and his continued progress in the hardest grind in pro wrestling, the G1 Climax.
