Nevada Athletic Commission Approves Return Of Combat Sports

The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued a ruling on Wednesday that would allow combat sports to return to the state. In the meeting, held over the phone, they ruled unanimously that combat sports events could resume in Nevada with enhanced health and safety protocols. As expected, the NSAC approved two UFC events as well as two events by Top Rope Boxing. The UFC events will go forward at the UFC Apex Center on May 30th and June 6th. The boxing events will be held at the MGM Grand on June 9th and 11th.

“Throughout this process, we’ve been working hand in glove with the UFC,” said NSAC Director Bob Bennett.”I’m aware of their operations plan and everything is moving forward based on their operations plan and our protocols. I’ve reviewed their operations plan. It’s very comprehensive. We’re moving in the right direction. I’m pleased to see we’re working in concert with a closed-system event and I expect it to be very successful.”

After running three events in Jacksonville, Florida following the addition of professional sports to the list of essential businesses, it was top priority for UFC to return to Las Vegas. “It makes more sense with what’s going on for us to be doing the events at our own arena,” UFC president Dana White told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It will be a lot safer for my employees, the fighters, everyone. I hope to have fights there this month.”

According to documents obtained by ESPN, all personnel must complete a questionnaire before departure and submit to a COVID-19 test upon arrival. In addition, they are to remain quarantined until the end of their events.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday night that the state would be entering Phase 2 of its reopening, which includes sporting events, concerts, and theater performances without an audience. While the NAC only approved these four events, these rulings could lead to the return of Pro Wrestling in Nevada.
