Buckle Bomb – Is It Banned?

Buckle Bomb – Is It Banned?

Reports came out yesterday that WWE added the Buckle Bomb to the list of banned moves. The Powerbomb into the turnbuckles has made some in the company uneasy in recent years. In 2015, Sting suffered a career-ending neck injury after taking a Buckle Bomb from Seth Rollins. Also, Kairi Sane suffered a neck injury earlier this year after taking the move from Nia Jax. Dave Meltzer stated on Wrestling Observer Radio that it was likely this last injury that triggered the decision.

Meltzer asked his co-host on WOR:

“Remember the show a couple of weeks ago where Nia Jax wrestled Kairi Sane? When she threw her in there and we were all worried? I think she was going for the middle one and I think she hit the bottom one but whatever, it didn’t look good. That was the one that caused it.”

Speaking about Sting, Meltzer said:

“Because of what happened to Sting, I was almost surprised it didn’t happen then. There were people who were wanting it banned before that. It was one of those things where there were people against it and then when that thing happened it was kind of like that was the straw that broke the camel’s back and Vince banned it.”

The buckle bomb joins the Piledriver, the Punt Kick, and chair shots to the head on the list of banned moves. However, relegation to the list does not mean we will never see the buckle bomb again. WWE banned Seth Rollins’s Curb Stomp in mid-2015 over fears of young fans imitating the move. WWE banned the piledriver in 2000, but have allowed some wrestlers to perform the move with special permission.

While the Buckle Bomb may be leaving WWE programming for the foreseeable future, there is not yet any word about powerbombs to the ring apron or barricades.
