In a statement made today by WWE.com Joe Hennig aka Curtis Axel has officially been released by the company.
WWE has come to terms on the release of Curtis Axel.

Axel’s adds to the growing list of talent the WWE has released recently. It was only a couple of weeks ago upon where the company announced a slew of releases. With a number of names being already announced a number more are speculated to also be included as well. Axel has been with WWE and its developmental promotions since 2007. He first joined Florida Championship Wrestling under Steve Keirn. While there he competed under his given name, Joe Hennig. He was the son of WWE Hall of Famer, Mr Perfect Curt Hennig and grandson of Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig. Axel’s history in wrestling is well documented. While comparisons are typically going to be made, Axel’s in-ring ability was both natural and authentic.
Axel first appeared as Michael McGillicutty a member of The Nexus. At the time he was under the tutelage of CM Punk. After returning back to NXT, Axel remerged under the management of Paul Heyman and with a new name. Curtis Axel was as much a tribute to the legacies of his father as it was his grandfather.
Curtis Axel: A Third-Generation Champion
He captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Much like his father before him, Axel wanted due the title justice. Axel was used predominantly as part of either tag teams or factions. He was a part of The Miz’s Miztourage and in more recent years teamed with Bo Dallas as part of The B-Team. Championship success didn’t elude him either as he and Dallas captured the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship.
Axel has also helped stars such as The Rock in their preparation for matches including his against John Cena at WrestleMania.
